Quique Setien Already Under Pressure at Barcelona Following Behaviour During Clasico Defeat

Quique Setien is already under pressure as the head coach of Barcelona, despite only taking the hot-seat at the Camp Nou dugout in January.

The 61-year-old was brought in to replace the outgoing Ernesto Valverde, who had been intensely criticised in his two and a half years at the club.


El Partidazo de COPE report that the defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, and in particular the way in which Setien and assistant coach Eder Sarabia reacted during the loss, has put both of their jobs at risk.

Sarabia, in particular, was caught on camera shouting about players not following instructions.

Another report, this time from ?Club de la Mitjanit, says that key members of the squad are discontent with the current situation at the club and that Setien was not ready to become the boss of a club as big as Barcelona.

It is – without doubt – a tense stage in the season as ?Barcelona compete with ?Real Madrid for the title, but the way in which Setien and Sarabia have handled the situation is not up to the standard that players expect.

Sarabia in particular has a track record for poor behaviour, as he has been sent off six times and received 11 yellow cards on the touchline since joining Setien as assistant in October 2015 at Las Palmas.

Their defeat at the Bernabeu means Madrid have leapfrogged them in the table, while they don’t look like they’ll be strong enough to win the ?Champions League for the first time since 2015.

Setien penned a deal until the summer of 2022 when he joined, but if he can’t turn fortunes around at Camp Nou, he’ll be lucky to last that long.
