Barcelona President Intervenes to Cool Talks of Eric Abidal Sacking After Messi Criticism

The feud between Barcelona star ?Lionel Messi and sporting director Eric Abidal appears to be over after president Josep Bartomeu held talks with the each of them.

In a recent interview, the Frenchman criticised an unnamed group of Barça players who he believes played a role in the sacking of former manager Ernesto Valverde. Messi responded angrily – and publicly – to Abidal’s comments, saying board members ‘should also face up to their responsibilities’.

There had been speculation Abidal could be sacked as ?La Bluagrana look to keep their prized possession happy, but those rumours were ?swiftly dismissed by Bartomeu, who has since spoken to the pair about the conflict.

?ESPN report that Messi had three phone calls with the president following the war of words, with the Argentine informing Bartomeu he will not hold a grudge against his former teammate.

The 32-year-old assured his senior that his focus for the rest of the 2019/20 campaign will be on footballing matters as the Catalans continue to fight in three separate competitions.

Bartomeu also spoke to Abidal and CEO Oscar Grau as he searched for a resolution, with the latter pair echoing Messi’s sentiments. They agree the best course of action is forgiving and forgetting.

Some outlets area trying hard to push the idea that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will choose not to remain at Camp Nou once the season reaches its conclusion, with ?Manchester City monitoring his situation on the Spanish coast.

He isn’t going though, ?as 90min broke down earlier.

The Catalan side go away to Athletic this Thursday in the Copa del Rey, before heading to Andalusia on the weekend to visit Real Betis – the former club of new Barça manager Quique Setien. Spicy.
