Dates to Remember: When Every Barcelona Player’s Contract Is Due to Expire

Barcelona actually have no first team players due to be out of contract this summer, with all their key stars tied down to the end of the 2019/20 season or longer.

It seems like a healthy position on the surface, but managing the situation and deciding who to keep and who to sell in the coming years will be critical so as not to end up with an ageing squad that will need substantial rebuilding.

Here’s a look at exactly when every Barcelona first team player’s current contract expires…

1. Expiring 30th June 2019

Thomas Vermaelen (DF) – Continues to serve as a sound back-up when fit. Any decision on the Belgian’s future probably won’t come until his contract is up.

Sergi Samper (MF) – Was tipped to be the next superstar La Masia graduate. Now 23 and no closer to making a breakthrough, a long-term career at Camp Nou seems unlikely.

Douglas* (DF) – Has only played eight times for Barça since joining from Sao Paulo in 2014. On loan with Benfica until summer and the Portuguese side hold a permanent option.

Munir El Haddadi* (FW) – Failed to make the breakthrough to Barça’s first-team ranks after playing bit part roles in 2014/15 and 2015/16 while 19 and 20 years of age. Out on loan since August 2016.

Gerard Deulofeu* (FW) – Arguably hasn’t made the most of his surprise return to Camp Nou after initially leaving in 2015. Now on loan at Watford and could be sold this summer.

2. Expiring 30th June 2020

Jordi Alba (DF) – Signed a new long-term deal in 2015 and would expect to earn one more short extension before his time with the club comes to an end.

Aleix Vidal (DF) – Many might be surprised that he is still at the club, but the versatile wing-back has played more games in 2017/18 than he has in any other season at Barça.

Denis Suarez (MF) – Contract could be extended to 2021 if he triggers an extension clause by playing a certain number of games in the 2019/20 campaign.

Marlon Santos* (DF) – Loaned out to Nice for two seasons last summer, despite only just completing his permanent arrival from Fluminense. The French club hold a €20m option to buy.

Arda Turan* (MF) – Seems inevitable that the Turkish star will never play for Barça again. He’ll stay on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir until his Camp Nou contract expires.

Rafinha* (MF) – Moved to Italy to join Inter on loan in January and the Serie A side hold an option to make it a permanent deal at the end of the season for €35m.

3. Expiring 30th June 2021

Jasper Cillessen (GK) – Has only really played in Copa del Rey games since joining Barça from Ajax in 2016, but is thought to be keen to stay despite rumoured offers to leave.

Samuel Umtiti (DF) – With several reported suitors, it was thought that the club was keen to quickly extend the Frenchman’s contract. Gossip has since gone quiet.

Lucas Digne (DF) – Signed as a back-up last summer and that is all he may be for the next few years. Will only be 27 when his deal is due to expire, though, so his fledgling Barça career is not necessarily over.

Sergio Busquets (MF) – Last agreed a new deal in September 2016. Those terms will now see the three-time Champions League winner through to a week before his 33rd birthday.

Ivan Rakitic (MF) – Now 30 years of age, his current contract could well be his last at Barça as he will have turned 33 by the time it is due to expire.

Paulinho (MF) – A surprising but good signing from Guangzhou Evergrande in China last summer. Due to celebrate his 30th birthday in a few months’ time.

Andre Gomes (MF) – The Portuguese international’s Barça future remains rather uncertain. He is yet to justify his €55m price tag and could be let go if the right offer materialises.

Lionel Messi (FW) – Finally nailing his contract in November was a huge moment for the club. He’ll be 34 when it expires, but Barça president Bartomeu has already said it won’t be the last.

Luis Suarez (FW) – Would perhaps be expected to leave when his current deal expires, by which point he will have been at Camp Nou for seven seasons.

Paco Alcacer (FW) – Unlikely to make it to the end of his contract. A €30m move from Valencia simply hasn’t worked out and he could be shown the door this summer.

4. Expiring 30th June 2022

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (GK) – Rewarded with a new contract at the end of last season, his first as the club’s undisputed number one after previously sharing duties with Claudio Bravo.

Gerard Pique (DF) – The defender will likely see out the rest of his career at Camp Nou after he recently extended his contract to the end of the 2021/22 season.

Nelson Semedo (DF) – Hasn’t been a regular starter in his debut season, partially because of injury, but will surely have at least one or two more years to try and impress.

Sergi Roberto (MF) – The versatile La Masia graduate secured his long-term future with the club after agreeing a new deal in January of this year.

Ousmane Dembele (FW) – Has endured a challenging first season at Barça after suffering a ruptured hamstring in one of his earliest games. Needs a strong campaign in 2018/19.

5. Expiring 30th June 2023

Yerry Mina (DF) – Barça’s latest capture was brought in for less than €12m in January and was immediately tied to a long-term contract. Might be a year before he hits his stride.

Philippe Coutinho (MF) – Joined the club for a fee potentially rising to €160m just a few days before Mina and represents Barça’s single biggest transfer to date.

6. ‘Contract for Life’

Andres Iniesta (MF) – The club captain agreed a new deal in October 2017 that promised to tie him to Camp Nou for life. But just a few months on, the four-time Champions League winner has announced he will leave the recently crowned La Liga champions after 22 years.
