Barça end with the most goals, with the second best defence, and have three players in the top five scorers
FC Barcelona retained their league title with Saturday’s win over Granada, in what was a long and tough campaign.
Luis Enrique’s side earned the club’s 24th league title success and conjured up some impressive numbers in doing so, no less than the 39-match unbeaten run and Luis Suárez’s 40-goal season. Here are the ten stats that really stood out:
-
Luis Enrique used 25 players throughout the season. Out of the 24 first team players, only goalkeeper Jordi Masip did not get any game-time, while Gerard Gumbau and Sergi Samper from the reserves were handed a few opportunities with the seniors. Luis Suárez, with 3,150 minuts, was the most used player.
-
Barça ended the season as the league’s highest scorers with 112 goals; 67 of those were scored at Camp Nou and 45 on the road. Incredibly, 24 goals were scored in the last five games of the season.
-
Out of those 112 goals, the trident was responsible for 90: Luis Suárez (40) + Leo Messi (26) + Neymar Jr (24). The trio were also among the league’s top five scorers.
-
Interestingly, the great majority of the goals were scored in the second half of games (70), while just 42 came in the opening periods.
-
Most of the goals were scored inside the area, with just eight coming from outside the box. Less surprisingly is the fact that six of those eight were hit by Leo Messi.
-
The Argentine fired in four free-kicks during the season, the joint-most in the league with Valencia’s Dani Parejo. Neymar also hit the target with a set-play, making Barça the most efficient side from direct free-kicks.
-
There were goal-gluts galore – Athletic Club, Getafe, and Sporting were all hit for six with no reply while the team beat Depor 8-0. And there was that famous 4-0 rout of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
-
Barça completed the most passes in the division by some distance (21,012), amounting to an 87% success rate. Sergio Busquets racked up the most with 2,176 successful passes.
-
The Barça backline kept 18 clean sheets out of 38 matches. Bravo and Ter Stegen let in just 29 goals between them, a total only bettered by Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, who conceded just 18.
-
For yet another year, Barça were the side with the least cards received. The Catalans were cautioned just 66 times and the only red card was for Javier Mascherano
