It was away to Betis in December 2012 that the Argentinian scored his 86th goal in a calendar year to beat Gerd Müller’s 30 year old record

And then there was more…

After breaking the record, Leo Messi still had time to extend his record and he did: He scored twice against Cordoba in the Copa del Rey, and also against Atlético in the league, and finished the year with a goal against Valladolid to take his eventual count up to 91.

Leo Messi returns on Saturday to a ground where he set yet another record to add to his ever-increasing collection. On 9 December 2012, it was at the Benito Villamarín where the Argentinian completed the highest tally of goals ever scored in a calendar year.

It was a record that dated back to 1972, when Gerd Müller had scored 85 times for Bayern Munich and Germany. A figure that many believed would never be beaten.

But history was made three decades later, and by who else but Barça’s magnificent Argentinian. He scored twice in the game away to Betis to take his total for the year up to 86. This Saturday at 8.30pm CET, he’ll be returning to the place where it happened..
