It’s the first time ever the Argentine has won the award, doing so after scoring six goals in six games
Who doesn’t like to start off the New Year with a bang? Lionel Messi does.
While it may be almost impossible to believe, Messi has finally been named the La Liga Player of the Month. The award has been given out since the beginning of the 2013/14 season and, this January, after 22 other players had been deemed more worthy in past editions, it was finally given to the world’s best player.
Messi’s six goals in January came in six league games, and included a hat trick against Granada along with goals against Athletic Club, Málaga and Atlético de Madrid. He now has 12 league goals on the season.
Almost as inconceivable, Messi is just the second Barça player to win the award, now in its third season. Neymar took the honours in November.
