Barça Women were able to overcome the atmosphere of the away leg in Holland to take an important 1-0 win in the first leg of their last 16 tie against FC Twente. Xavi Llorens’ side now have the upper hand in the UEFA Women’s League thanks to a strike from Olga Garcia in the second of the contest in Enschede.

More than 15,000 people turned up for the game in the Twente Stadion but the big crowd did not affect the visitors in the slightest. In fact, Barça had the best of the opening exchanges, Olga Garcia and then Jenni Hermoso going close. Twente appeared shell shocked by the blaugranes’ excellent start and only an effort from Van de Sanden in the early stages gave them any cause for optimism. FC Barcelona’s Women’s team continued to press and the attacking trio of Alexia, Olga and Jenni Hermoso were a constant threat for the Dutch side. The best chance for Twente before the break fell to the impressive Van de Sanden whose effort just sailed past the Barça keeper Laura Ràfols’ post. Despite Xavi Llorens’ side having the upper hand, the two sides went in at half time level at 0-0.

A valuable goal

At the start of the second half, the home side took the initiative as they dominated possession. Nevertheless, Barça had chances on the counter, Marta Torrejón going close. Despite having the better of the game, Twente only forced Ràfols into action on one occasion when Roord was denied by the Barça keeper. The game was finely balanced and one chance seemed destined to decided the encounter one way or the other. Fortunately for the blaugranes, that opportunity fell to Olga after good work by Jenni Hermoso, the blaugrana striker firing home to give the visitors the lead with just under quarter of an hour to go. It was a vital goal and there could have been a second in the closing minutes when both Bàrbara Latorre and Marta Torrejón went close. In the end, Olga’s goal was enough to give Xavi Llorens’ side a valuable 1-0 win ahead of the second leg next Wednesday in the Miniestadi in Barcelona.
