In an exclusive photo shoot for the Club’s official publication, Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suárez show the chemistry that bonds them both on and off the field
The offensive trio formed by Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr. and Luis Suárez was forever immortalised in an iconic photograph taken last season during the team’s historic and unprecedented second treble-winning campaign. Now they’re back, and have taken part in an exclusive photo shoot for Barça Magazine, the official publication of FC Barcelona, which is published in Spanish and Catalan and in the coming days will arrive at the homes of the Club’s members.
Together they form what people are calling the Trident, which Barça Magazine has classified as a proper name with capital letters due to it’s unmistakable reference to the lethal potential of Barça’s big three strikers. Messi, Neymar and Suarez are the stars of the greatest forward line in Club history in terms of goals scored, record-breaking numbers in Europe last season. And there’s no question that much of their success has stemmed from the chemistry and mutual understanding shared by the trio both on and off the field.
Barça Magazine tells three different stories relating to the Trident. The first is about how these three players remain as carefree as they were as children playing in the streets, while at the same time embodying three very different schools of football and how their paths crossed at Barça. Messi represents the La Masia, FC Barcelona’s youth academy, where he grew both as a player and as a person; Neymar is a symbol of the Brazilian fantasy; Suárez, from Uruguay, stands for the lethal instinct of a pure centre forward.
Barça Magazine also looks at the Trident from a historical perspective, categorising it as the best offensive threesome in the annals of Club history, as well as the impact that Messi, Neymar and Suárez have had in the locker room, as told through the eyes of three of their teammates, Javier Mascherano, Adriano Correia, and Andrés Iniesta.
Issue number 77 of the official Club magazine also delves into other issues, such as the team’s dynasty-like decade between the 2005/06 and 2014/15 seasons, during which they won 23 titles, including four UEFA Champions Leagues and the pair of trebles — a singular achievement in the history of football.
This month’s issue also analyses this year’s basketball team, FC Barcelona Lassa, which opened the season by winning two titles after an extensive makeover of the squad that includes seven new additions. Other stories include a look at the finalists of the Espai Barça, the personal side of handball player Daniel Sarmiento, and the memory of ex-Barça midfielder Hugo ‘Cholo’ Sotil.
