Milan await
He concluded with some words about the forthcoming Champions League encounter with AC Milan. “They are a difficult opponent and keep things very tight at the back. You must remember that they have more European Cups than we do. This might not be their best moment but they have players that can make life difficult for you”.
Xavi Hernández is the protagonist today on FIFA.com. He is one of the five FCB players in FIFA’s all-star XI for 2012. “It’s a very big honour! To be picked by my fellow professionals from around the world makes me enormously proud”, said the midfield star.
He spoke about whether the team can continue to produce similar success, saying that “we are a very competitive group. You see us train and you can see how much we want to win, even in training matches. The players have been hungry to win and will continue to be hungry to win. We are practically the same set of footballers and the results have been almost unbeatable”.
A continuing model
Asked about the change of manager, Xavi insisted that “Vilanova and Guardiola have different personalities but the training sessions are very similar and the system is much the same. It’s continuity in every sense of the word”.
He feels that in the 2011/12 season, they were missing that little bit of luck in key matches, and admits that “there was a little less tension than normally … But I don’t feel that we owe anything to the fans. A negative season just means we go into the next one feeling even hungrier to win things again”.
Out to win everything
“There are still lots of games left but we do have a huge cushion of points and we’re getting closer to the Liga title”, claims Xavi. “The team is very competitive. We want to do well in every competition. We want to win all the titles again, but we have to be prudent and cautious. There’s no lack of talent, we just hope luck is also on our side.”
