Spain and France, the favourite teams to make it out of Group I, drew one-all at the Vicente Calderón this evening. Didier Deschamps’ men managed to secure a well-deserved 1-1 draw in the last seconds of the match. Spain, who dominated up until Sergio Ramos’ goal, saw how France came alive after the opener in search for the equaliser.
Pedro provides assist for Ramos goal
The starting team sent out by Vicente del Bosque was made up of six FC Barcelona players: Busquets (centre back), Alba, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro and Cesc (forward). Only Villa and Valdés were on the bench.
The reigning champions of the world lost Silva to injury after only nine minutes of play. However, Spain’s domination of France continued. The home team took the lead thanks to a goal scored by Ramos, who had previously hit the post, after a good pass from Pedro (min 25).
Lloris saves Cesc’s penalty attempt
The 1-0 jolted France into action. The game opened up and the visitors started to threaten Casillas’ goal. The first chance fell to Benzema, but it was saved by the keeper, the next chance ended in the back of the net, but the referee annulled the goal due to a very doubtful offsides called by the linesman.
Minutes later, Lloris saved Cesc’s penalty attempt. Koscielny had brought down Pedro in the area on 42 minutes, an action that earned the Frenchman a yellow card. The French keeper then saved two very clear chances for Spain right before the break.
Spain suffers and France draws level on 93 minutes
The second half, just as in the first, started with another injury for the home team, this time it was Arbeloa. The order with which Spain had played in the first half disappeared as both teams looked to score. Franck Ribery, for example, came very close to making it 1-1 on 57 minutes. France was close to the equaliser.
Spain lost its fluidity and France’s counterattacks started to make the fans at the Calderón nervous. Del Bosque subbed Iniesta off for Torres. After the sub, the tables had completely flipped in France’s favor. The visiting side pinned Spain back and in the last play of the game France drew level thanks to a goal from Giroud.
