Barça’s B team chalked up another win at the Mini Estadi with the victory over Gijon, bouncing back from last week’s defeat in Cordoba to take three points that keep them up in the leading positions. Barça dominated possession from the start, with 75% of possession, but the early chances fell to the visitors, with Oier called on to make stops from Sangoy, Trejo and David Rodriguez. The key moment of the game came on the half hour when Sporting keeper Cuéllar was shown a red card for bringing down Dongou. From the resulting free kick, Grimaldo came close to beating substitute keeper Juan Pablo.
Barça B soon took advantage of their numerical superiority and just four minutes after Sporting had been reduced to 10 men, Luis Alberto made it 1-0 with a long range shot. Even so, Oier was called on a few more times before the break to keep the scores 1-0 when the two teams went in for half time.
Penalty miss
The fast pace of the first half continued in the second, with Sporting getting a penalty after just two minutes after a foul by Patric, but David Rodriguez hit his effort against the post. Ten minutes later and Barça B came close to going two up through Dongou – who on the hour mark finally did get on the score sheet.
With Eusebio ringing the changes and the result looking safe, Barça continued to look for the third goal, which eventually came on 85 minutes through Joan Àngel Román. The result leaves Barça B in fourth spot with 16 points.
