The two Barça players both played the full 90 minutes at the Estadio Nacional in Lima and after the point, Argentina sit top of the World Cup qualifying group with 14 points.
Leo Messi found it hard to break down Peru’s solid defence led by Carlos Zambrano.

Leo Messi and Javier Mascherano both started Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Peru in Lima and the point taken, in a hard fought game, leaves Alejandro Sabella’s side top of the qualifying group.

The hosts missed a golden chance to go ahead after just one minute, when Claudio Pizarro missed a penalty. Leo Messi was closely marked from the off by Carlos Zambrano and the World Player of the Year found it hard to make much impact. To add insult to injury, Zambrano got the opener on 21 minutes – with Higuain equalising a quarter of an hour later.

Argentina’s next game in the group is on October 12th, at home to Uruguay.
