?Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has revealed that Ernesto Valverde has an “exit clause” in his contract that can be activated next summer.
Although Barcelona are top of La Liga and already into the knockout stages of the Champions League, the 55-year-old is under pressure at Camp Nou and has been tipped to leave at the end of the season.
Valverde has a contract in Catalonia until 2021, but Barcelona’s president has revealed that the manager could leave next summer due to an “exit clause” that’s written into his deal.
“I have seen many coaches, they are all very serious because the responsibility of bringing Barça as a coach is huge,” Bartomeu told Catalunya Ràdio.
“Here every year the option is to win everything. There is no option; either you win everything or the season is not good.
“He has a contract until the year 21, but next spring there is the option that club or he decides not to follow, an exit clause.”
It hasn’t been confirmed either way if Valverde’s release clause will be activated by Barcelona, but there has already been plenty of speculation surrounding who could be next through the door at Camp Nou.
One of the club’s top targets is understood to be Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.
KNVB director Nico-Jan Hoogma has already revealed that Koeman has a clause in his contract which will allow him to leave his position with the national team, although it’s a clause which is specific to Barcelona.
Koeman himself later confirmed that there was an exit clause in his deal which would allow him to take over at Barcelona, but the former Everton and Southampton boss added a decision won’t be made until after Euro 2020.
“There is an evaluation moment after the European Championship,” Koeman said. “I can leave for one club, that is also stated in the clause. I can also say that I am not leaving for another club.”
