Alexis Sánchez headed one of Chile’s two goals in the win against fellow qualifiers Ecuador (2-1)
While Uruguay beat Argentina 3-2, Chile are through to the finals for the second time in a row
Spain were not the only country to celebrate qualification for the World Cup Finals last night. Alexis and Chile are also heading for Brazil next summer. The Barça striker headed home the opener last night against Ecuador following a terrific cross from the left wing to finally break down an Ecuadorian defence that had been impenetrable for the first 35 minutes.
Two minutes later, Medel made it 2-0 from a corner, and Chile could have extended their lead, but it was Felipe Caicedo of Ecuador who scored the only other goal of the game, culminating a strong counter attack. Nevertheless, both teams were celebrating at the end of the night, for although Uruguay beat Argentina 3-2, it wasn’t a big enough win to narrow down the goal difference, and they will go into the play-off with Jordan.
After the game, Alexis said “these are some of the most marvellous moments of my life. It is all thanks to my team-mates and my family … It has been a long road to get to the World Cup.”
